We've had the hottest, driest summer that we can remember and we are still officially declared a 'drought' area.

The beach remains lovely, and the water's warm enough for a refreshing swim.

Last year's lambs are ready to go to the sales and Roger the ram will be back looking after the mums next week - a bit later than planned, but there's not much feed around.

Our chickens continue to regularly provide us with fabulous eggs for those farmers' breakfasts. The gardens have felt the full brunt of the dry weather (no significant rain since before Christmas) but we are still enjoying cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes and fresh herbs.

This season we have had guests from UK, Australia, Germany (the same couple came three times during their extended working holiday in New Zealand) and Japan. Oh, and a few Aucklanders wanting a break from city life.

And while you're reading this, a small rave about one of NZ's best kept secrets (apart from Wisdome Cottage) - the Overlander train from Wellington to Auckland (or vice versa).    My 16 year old daughter and I recently visited Wellington and caught the Overlander back to Auckland on a perfect autumn day. Can't recommend this fabulous journey enough, so if you are visiting from overseas make sure that you try this amazing experience.

So what are you waiting for - pay us a visit while the summer still lingers on...........
